This is not a recipe but a request...................do any of you folks have a tried and tested recipe for Irish Soda Bread. I've tried some in the past but all have failed and I'm not ready to throw in the towel yet and blame my own efforts. lol. Please help if you can.

bow down

I have this recipe mazzie i dont know if it is what you require
the recipe is for soda scones

225g plain flour
1 tsp of bicarbonate of soda
1 tsp cream of tartar
25g of butter
150 ml buttermilk

pre heat oven 200c/400f gas mark 6
sift flour bicarbonate of sodaand cream of tartar into mixing bowl
rub in butter
make a well in centre of flour mixture and pour in buttermilk
mix quicky into a soft dough with a palette knife
Turn dough on to floured board and knead lightly until smooth
form into a round and flatten the dough slightly before placing on a lightly floured baking tray
if making scones than roll out until 3/4 inch thick
stamp out into about 12 rounds
leave to stand 15mins
place scones on a greased and lightly flour baking tray
bake in oven for about 10mins for scones slightly longer for loaf
or until well risen and golden and ounding hollow when tapped underneath

I have this recipe as well but havent tried this one

170g self raising wholemeal flour
170g plain flour
1/2 tsp of salt
1/2 tsp of bicarbonate of soda
290ml ( 1.1/2 pints) buttermilk

pre heat oven 400f/200c/gas mark 6
place flour salt bicarbonat of soda in to large mixing bowl
make well into centre of flour
stir in buttermilk
mix quicky with a fork to form a soft dough ( you may need to a little milk if dough seems to stiff but it should not be to wet or sticky)
Turn out on to a lightly floured surface and knead slightly
form into round and flatten slightly before placing on a lightly floured baking tray
cut a cross on top and bake for about 30 mins or until loaf sounds hollow when tapped underneath

Thanks for the recipe sweep but thats not what I'm after. Irish soda bread is like bread rather than scones. It doesn't have much taste on its own but I understand its good for sandwiches and stuff. Thanks for trying anyway and I'll probably try your recipe anyway. Its different from my scone recipe.

Hi sweep...........apologies................

I thought that was the recipe I already had and had tried but its not. I'm going to give it a blast. Think I prefer the look of the one with the wholemeal flour tho'. I'll let you know how it turns out. Sorry again. I must learn to read things properly. lol

ashamed
